Tweet by TxDot goes viral, left lane use is the topic

Local residents seem to always be discussing the traffic topic of driving in the left lane without the intent of passing fellow motorist. Last week, TxDot released a public service announcement stating the law behind this subject.

The tweet by TxDot, which went viral, says, “We’ve heard many of you didn’t know: The left lane on a divided highway is a PASSING lane. After you pass someone, move into the right lane so you don’t hold up traffic. Impeding the flow of traffic by continuing to drive in the left lane is punishable by a fine of up to $200.”

The tweet by the Texas Department of Transportation is shown below.

Section 544.011 of the Texas Transportation Code says this of Lane Use Signs, “If, on a highway having more than one lane with vehicles traveling in the same direction, the Texas Department of Transportation or a local authority places a sign that directs slower traffic to travel in a lane other than the farthest left lane, the sign must read ‘left lane for passing only.'”

Please practice safety when traveling around the area and stick to the law so everyone travels as safe as possible.
