What Should I Look for when Buying a Standing Desk?

Office workers are starting to stand up, literally, as they move from a traditional office chair and stationary desk to standing desks. These types of desks have been growing in popularity over the past several years and with so many available options it can be daunting to try and determine which options are the best fit for you. Let’s look at some things to consider when shopping for a standing desk.

Electrical v. Mechanical

There are two main types of standing desk height adjustment mechanisms, electrical and mechanical. Electrical standing desks are more expensive but are easier to adjust using a motor system and buttons. Mechanical desks are typically less expensive and use some kind of knob or crank system to adjust the desk height.

Electrical standing desks are easier to use than their mechanical counterparts. The height adjustment mechanism is controlled by a motor and all the user needs to do is touch a button to move the desk higher or lower. Some electrical standing desks also offer the option of setting one or more preset heights, allowing users to simply touch a button to raise or lower their desk quickly and easily.

Mechanical standing desks feature a hand crack or knob mechanism to raise and lower the desk. This method of raising and lowering the desk could prove tedious for some users as it can require several turns to find the right height each time you want to adjust the desk. Obviously, there is no way to preset your preferred height on a mechanical standing desk.

A Sturdy Base and Solid Desktop

Another important feature to consider when shopping for a standing desk is a sturdy base. Without a sturdy base the desk may wobble when raised and lowered or could shift if you lean on it. Most bases are made from aluminum or steel and can be purchased separately from the desktop, allowing users to choose from a variety of desktops based on their personal preferences. When purchasing a desktop be sure to consider the weight and width of the desktop to ensure it will fit the base and that the base can handle the full weight of the desktop and other items. If you have heavier items on your desktop you will want to be sure to check the weight capacity of your base before purchasing so that it does not collapse or wobble when raised or lowered.

Additional Features

Some additional features that some standing desks come with that are convenient for users are cord management options to help keep cords organized and desktops free of clutter.  One option is grommets, or holes in the desktop, for the cords to be put through.  Other standing desks have a cord tray keeping cords tucked out of the way and the desktop clear. Some electrical standing desks also offer the option of USB ports allowing for easy charging for USB devices.

Accessories for your Standing Desk

When shopping for a standing desk do not forget to look for a standing mat to go along with your new desk. These mats provide stable support while standing and can help prevent any discomfort from standing on a hard surface.  They are typically made of foam offering support for feet, knees, and back when standing.
