Reign
This show follows the life of Mary, Queen of Scots, who is quite a celebrated figure in European history. She is headed to Meet Prince Francis in France, her betrothed. Their marriage is expected to create a strong alliance between the two states, essential for the future of the kingdoms. Mary however, is attracted to someone else, and has been receiving offers from a tirade of suitors. She is also not well loved, in fact is hated, by the French Court but must continue to live there for a political alliance. She only has her four ladies to rely on as she navigates the treacherous waters of politics at the French court.
The Tudors
Well, you got a glimpse of the lives of the French and Scottish royalty so it makes sense that you get an idea of what the English royalty were up to at the time as well and The Tudors is a great show for that. It focuses on the lives of the Tudor family starting from King Henry VIII, who ruled for decades.
The show offers a bit of everything for everyone. If you’re looking for political drama and court intrigues, you’ve come to the right place. But, that is not all that it offers. You’ll get some sexy scandals, a little comedy, and even a little romance. A show so well executed, it’s unlikely that you won’t fall in love with it.
Downton Abbey
No list of historical fiction shows can be complete without this gem. Downton Abbey is perhaps one of the best shows we’ve come across and has a loyal following to prove it. It also happens to be one of the only shows that has its own line of merchandise, go figure.
What makes this historical fiction so real is the gripping fear many characters share of losing all they have with just one major social event. It also grounds us by showing us that the big, powerful aristocrats too deal with the similar issues the common man does. The amazing dialogues, believable relationships and great writing make this series an enriching drama to binge-on. This show will hook you in and leave you available to do little else until the binge session is complete. So make sure you begin this series on a long weekend.
Outlander
This show uses time travel to teleport us to the 18th century Scotland with a 1945 married nurse, Claire Randall. As soon as she arrives to this new world, her life is threatened, but luckily a daring Scotsman, Jamie Fraser saves her life. The situation forces her to marry him and a passionate whirlwind romance between the two ensues.
This all takes place in the backdrop of British Redcoats taking over Scotland and killing all who oppose them. And, it is during the Jacobite Risings that Claire gets pregnant with her child with Jamie.
If you like the historical fiction genre sprinkled with romance, then outlander is the perfect show for you. You’ll fall in love with the characters and will find yourselves rooting for them.
Peaky Blinders
Sure, following the drama of royalty is interesting and seeing dashing warriors along the way is great, but sometimes you want to know what was happening in the lives of other people alive at the time. For example, did they have gang turf wars and what was it like?
Set in Birmingham, soon after World War I, this crime drama follows the Peaky Blinders gang. You get to see deals being made and how the country is coping with the losses of the war. This show excels at being historically accurate and boasts of multiple three-dimensional characters which you’ll come to love.
